Rwanda a leader in peace and Security - US Envoy

KIGALI - The outgoing US ambassador to Rwanda, Stuart Symington has said that Rwanda has become one of the world’s leading countries in the preservation of peace and security in Africa and the entire world.
The Ambassador made the remarks while addressing government officials and members of the diplomatic corps, who had gathered at the US Embassy in Kigali to celebrate the 235th Anniversary of the U.S independence.
In exclusive interview with The New Times, soon after addressing the gathering, Symington, said Rwanda’s participation in peace keeping efforts in various countries signifies its commitment in preserving peace.
“Rwanda has become a leader of peace and security. It has done a lot in ensuring peace in neighbouring countries and protecting people, especially in Darfur (Sudan) and other areas,” he said.
The envoy further commended the country for changing people’s lives through the provision of adequate health facilities, infrastructure and agriculture, which he believes has done immensely well in elevating the lives of Rwandans.
On the issue of mutual cooperation, Ambassador Symington acknowledged that USA and Rwanda can unite their people as one family for the benefit of the two countries.
Health Minister Agnes Binagwaho, who spoke on behalf of government. thanked the US government for its continued support to Rwandans, saying that this has saved the lives of many.
“The Rwandan government and nationals appreciate the assistance that the US gives to Rwanda. especially in the health sector. This contributes a lot to save lives and it shows the excellent relationship between the two countries.”The Minister also hailed the great job done by the Peace Corps, a US volunteer organisation for serving to develop the country in different areas like health, education, business development, ICT, environment and agriculture.
Binagwaho further thanked the outgoing ambassador for his personal contribution during his mandate, adding that he should continue to be Rwanda’s goodwill ambassador outside.
The new US envoy is expected to be announced on Friday next week.
